Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen launches 6th annual Fast-A-Thon to combat chronic hunger in New York City

New York City, New York, September 15, 2017.    On November 16th,  Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen will hold its 6th annual  Fast-A-Thon, held one week before Thanksgiving every year, to raise awareness about chronic hunger in New York City and to raise much needed funds for its daily, emergency food program. The soup kitchen has been serving up to 1800 meals to homeless and hungry New Yorkers on weekdays without interruption since 1982. Latest figures show that 1 out of 6 New Yorkers experience food insecurity every day. The Fast-A-Thon is based on the simple idea that by pledging to eat only one meal on November 16th, like many homeless and vulnerable New Yorkers do every day, people can raise awareness about chronic hunger, and raise money to help the soup kitchen continue serving a meal every weekday, including our traditional Thanksgiving meal. The success of the Fast-A-Thon relies on grass roots and social media efforts of “Fast-A-Thoners” who join the campaign at https://holyapostlesfast-a-thon2017.causevox.com or the shortened URL:  rebrand.ly/fastathon17 , between now and November 16th.

Interim Executive Director The Right Rev. Andrew R. St. John says, “By coming together as a community to fast and raise much needed funds for the soup kitchen we are also reminded that our guests’ hunger is real, is urgent, and requires our attention and care.”

The soup kitchen relies on charitable giving to fund more than half of its meals. Because of its partnership with area food rescue organizations, those costs work out to be only just over $1 per meal. Many soup kitchen guests report how their meals at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen make all their difference in their survival, health and success. “Coming here gives me the strength I need for work, and for the future too,” said Stephen, a soup kitchen guest who has recently found full time work and is no longer homeless.

Since 2012, individuals, teams and corporate supporters who have signed up for the annual Fast-A-Thon have raised over $270,000. Anyone can join by creating their own campaign page and sharing that link with their friends, family and social media network. To support the Fast-A-Thon, individuals can also donate to campaigns found at https://holyapostlesfast-a-thon2017.causevox.com/, or simply to the overall fundraiser.  Organizations are encouraged to create Fast-A-Thon teams. Corporations such as Agera Energy, Investors Bank and KPMG have contributed generously, in addition to their enthusiastic employee participation.
