NY, NY, October 29, 2018 – On November 15th, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen will host its 7th annual Fast-A-Thon, held one week before Thanksgiving every year, to increase awareness about hunger in New York City and raise much needed funds for its emergency food program. The soup kitchen serves nearly 1,000 meals to homeless and hungry New Yorkers each weekday and, as it has since its inception in 1982, welcomes everyone who comes through its doors without question or qualification.
Close to 1.4 million New Yorkers are struggling to put meals on their tables regularly, and Fast-A-Thon participants pledge to eat only one meal on November 15th, like so many soup kitchen guests must do each day. For every dollar raised, the soup kitchen will serve a delicious, hot meal to a New Yorker in need. This year’s goal is to raise $80,000, and the campaign is generously supported by Investors Bank.
“By coming together as a community to fast and raise much needed funds for the soup kitchen we are reminded that hunger is serious issue in our city and requires our heartfelt attention,” says The Rev. Dr. Anna S. Pearson, the soup kitchen’s Executive Director. “We’ve recently begun new programs to help meet the high need for food by packaging “to go” lunches – for homeless students at P.S. 33 in Chelsea, for seniors on fixed budgets living nearby, and for homeless individuals around Penn Station – and the funds we raise will go a long way in keeping our soup kitchen shelves stocked.”
The soup kitchen relies on charitable giving to fund more than half the cost of its meals. Because of its partnership with area food rescue organizations, those costs work out to be only about $1 to serve one meal to a hungry New Yorker. Clemons, an Air Force veteran with a management degree who is living on the street while he looks for a job, recently took time to show his gratitude for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. “These meals are a blessing,” he said. “New Yorkers are about taking care of their own and I really see that here.”
To join, individuals create their campaign page on the Fast-A-Thon web site and share the link with their family, friends and social networks. Since 2012, Fast-A-Thon individuals, teams and corporate supporters have raised over $330,000.
